Berlin is that type of city where you can afford to learn
something by walking and eating. The stories of its street food world are of
migration, invention, and a non-rule-following city.
One afternoon, I thought I would not visit museums but
rather have a tour of Berlin in the most enjoyable way I know, walking around
with my nose pointing towards the food scent.
Begin with the Traditional Currywurst.
In Berlin, no one can begin a street walk without
currywurst. It is everywhere, but it is right to take one out of a little stand
on a high-traffic corner. Sausage cut into slices, dipped in hot curry ketchup, does not sound fancy, though it makes sense.
I remember standing close to a kiosk in Kreuzberg with a
plastic fork in my hand as people would argue about which stand was the best.
That's part of the fun.
Note: Make sure to check Heathrow airport cheap parking when travelling and book according to your travel needs.
Doner Kebab: The Real Street Food Star in
Berlin.
The doner kebab of Berlin is worth a special mention. It is
the unofficial comfort food in the city that was introduced by Turkish
immigrants. The person who walks through neighborhoods such as Neukolln or
Kreuzberg will be surprised by the presence of numerous diner shops, and each
one of them is the best in their selection.
I have tried over one (admittedly, as a part of research)
and enjoyed the taste of everything that seemed to be fresh, particularly after
a long walk.
Markets That Make You Linger
When you happen to walk on a Thursday or a weekend, you need
to visit a street food market. Markthalle Neun is a favorite, not only of global food
stalls but also of energy. You have a chance to taste such things as homemade
dumplings and loaded grilled sandwiches.
Sweet Stops Along the Way
Berlin isn't all savory. You will see bakeries and warm
pretzels on your way as you walk. It happened one afternoon when I was walking,
I took a new cinnamon pastry in a tiny bakery close to Prenzlauer Berg and ate
it. It is such a simple situation that you remember.
